Event Report: Akiba Deculture with Major Macross Event

On February 22, 2009 the "Macross Super Dimension Space Launch Ceremony ~It's really 2009! It's 2/22 (Nyan Nyan Nyan), Deculture!" event was held at UDX Akiba Square. Those who took part in the Macross stamp rally and were quite lucky, won their ticket to the events held that day - a talkshow about the upcoming Macross movie and the launch ceremony of SDF-1 along with a mini live performance.

For those who couldn't get a ticket, the Super Dimension Karaoke Session, display corner and shop as well as the Official Macross F itasha wrapping change demonstration were free for anyone to join in.

At the talk show, Valkyrie designer, Shouji Kawamori (河森正治), character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto (美樹本晴彦) and mecha designer Kazutaka Miyatake (宮武一貴) talked about the production process from the birth of Macross 25 years ago till today. After twenty minutes, Alto's voice Yuichi Nakamura (中村悠一), Sheryl's voice Aya Endo(遠藤綾), Ranka's voice Ai Nakajima(中島愛) and director Shouji Kawamori (河森正治) talked about the upcoming movie.

Nakamura was said to be pushed by the girls during their after-recording sessions as he was wondering around. Endo commented that while she thought that Sheryl was strong at first, she turned out to be the weakest girl amongst the characters she has played before. As for Nakajima, ever since the day of her audition until her live show at Budoukan, everyday was just passing very quickly. "It is an anime that will stay close to my heart." says the voice of Ranka.

Director Kawamori commented that, he is not the sort who would do something that he has done before but this time the Macross staff, cast and taste has changed so it feels fresh and he had a lot of fun.

When the topic of the Macross movie came about, Nakamura says laughing that many things will be resolved in the movie. Endo says she has always wanted to watch it on the big screen while Nakajima says she was quite surprised when she heard the news for the first time and wondered if she would get to sing for the movie.

When asked about their request for the Macross movie to Directory Kawamori, Nakaima says that she wants an ending where everyone would be happy. Endo wants to see Sheryl flying high up in the sky..a little bit pompous yet cute at the same time. Nakamura says, "From a man's point of view, isn't it time for VF-28 to appear...?" to which Director Kawamori says that maybe you'll be riding on something unexpected.

After that, the PV for the Macross movie was revealed for the first time and to add on to that, Nakamura, Endo and Nakajima performed the after-recording live!! Imagine the crowd's response to be able to see the first screening of the PV and to hear Alto, Sheryl and Ranka reading their lines out live! There were lines that were not in the TV version and from the visuals of the PV you can just imagine the scale of the movie version. If that was not enough, Ranka Lee performed the new song "Sou dayo" for the Macross movie for the first time at the event.

Halfway through the event, suddenly Nakajima brought flowers and presents to the stage. Turns out that the three of them will soon be having their birthdays - Endo on February 17 and Kawamori as well as Nakamura both on the same day February 20. Everyone at the event celebrated and cheered for the three birthday boys and girls.

In ending, director Kawamori said "Among those who came today, I am sure you would come again 50 years later for the next event at 2059. During that day, I hope you would reminisce the days where there were Sheryl and Ranka and feel how far Macross Frontier has come along. I hope I would be able to produce a work that could ignite such feelings.

Later in the evening at 18:30 the event space was filled up again as fans came to see the main event - the space launching ceremony. It started out with the first episode showing on the big screen, with scenes of the acrobatic performances by the fighter planes. Then Michio Hazama (羽佐間道夫) who plays global captain greeted the fans with his character voice live. Katsumi Suzuki (鈴木勝美) who plays Kakizaki Hayao (柿崎速雄) also did the after-recording live when explaining about the VF-1 Valkyrie.

Suddenly, Macross went berserk, missiles were fired and the lights start to flicker. At this moment, the mecha prepares itself for launch as Global says "The booby trap has activated!". Sirens and red flickering and revolving lights filled the whole space. Then, as it slowly moves into position, carbon dioxide gas bursted out into the audiences. At this point, the Macross theme song started to play and everyone at the event sang in unison as though they were in a surreal Macross space launching ceremony.

Following that, Nekki Basara's Nobutoshi Kanna (神奈延年) belted out "Totsugeki Love Heart" and Ranka Lee's Nakajima performed "Fly through the stars", "My boyfriend is a pilot", "Angel's art" and "Love, do you remember?"

The climax was when the staff and cast thanked the fans and gave their comments as well as the end of the ceremony when director Kawamori along with everyone shouted "Yak Deculture!!!" and he threw himself to the audience in finale.

Macross time has finally caught up with real time. These old memories along with new ones from the upcoming Macross movie is sure to spread the Macross world and this day was one of the events that provided this "dream".
